What the hell is water?
Famous author, David Foster Wallace, once told a story.
Here are these two young fish swimming along,
and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way,
who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys, how’s the water?”
And the two young fish swim on for a bit,
and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes,
“What the hell is water?”
Many of us are oblivious to our own close-mindedness.
We picture ourselves as the centers of our own, individual universes,
instead of seeing the bigger, more interconnected picture.
A huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to be automatically certain of is,
it turns out, totally wrong and deluded.
I know that this stuff probably doesn’t sound fun and breezy or grandly inspirational.
Obviously, you can think of it whatever you wish.
It is about making it to 30, or maybe 50, without wanting to shoot yourself in the head.
Think about this. Why there are people online that are making money and you are not?
Not because they are better, but because they know something that you don’t.
It is because they are more aware of what’s happening to surround them.
It is about simple awareness – awareness of what is so real and essential,
so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep reminding ourselves,
over and over: “This is water, this is water.”
Anyway, this is NOT a rocket science, and you can understand it easily.
